Refilwe Community Centre

At a centre for the care and education of orphaned young children, often diagnosed with HIV/aids, a community hall has been constructed that will host many activities for the centre's children and an educational resource base for local people.

On November 20th 2008, The Rotary Club of Sandton (South Africa), working in conjunction with the Rotary clubs of Amwell, Hertford Shires and Hertford in England, handed over furniture, a public address and sound system and sporting equipment to the value of R90,000. (Approx £5,800.00) The funds contributed by the four clubs were supplemented by The Rotary Foundation in the form of a Matching Grant. This project follows on from the donation of the Community Hall, valued at some R1.2 million, by the Rotary Club of Sandton earlier this year.

“We were delighted, by working together with Rotary Clubs in the United Kingdom, to raise the money through a Rotary matching grant, to complete the community centre project through the donation of furniture and sporting equipment”, said Dudley Schnetler of Sandton Rotary. “We have identified Refilwe, a community project that addresses the needs of a severely disadvantaged community near Lanseria Airport, through medical help, child care and education and skills training, as an organisation that is congruent with the objects of Rotary”.

Jaco van Schalkwyk, Director of Refilwe, expressed his gratitude for the help provide by Rotary through the donation of the community Hall and now the furniture and sporting equipment.

“This is a great help to our work and provides a centre for people to gather for meetings, church services and functions as well as sporting activities”
